Bosvigo School Governor Statement: September 2017
Bosvigo School Governors would like to inform the Bosvigo community about the work that we carry out. To do so we have prepared this statement that reviews the 2016 – 2017 school year. It was an interesting year for the school, with a long awaited Ofsted inspection the week before the Christmas holidays and difficult financial decisions to be made. All while ensuring that our children received a high quality balanced education that equips them for life in the future.
Governors are volunteers who provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors appoint the head teacher and we hold the main responsibility for finance in schools. We work with Mr Wallis, the headteacher, to make the tough decisions about balancing resources. Our role is a strategic one, and our key functions are to:
- set the aims and objectives for the school
- set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
- set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
- monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
- be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)
Mr Wallis is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing board.
In the 2016 – 2017 School year we:
- Developed school strategy with leaders
at the school and throughout the year we ensured that school leaders were on
track to deliver that strategy.
- Helped the school develop the new
‘Mastery Approach’ to Maths. This included school visits to determine how the
new approach was being implemented in the school.
- Helped develop the 2017 – 2018 annual
budget, which all governors reviewed. We had to take into account the financial
security of the school with year-on-year costs increasing and our funding being
reduced. We had to take difficult decisions that had a huge effect on some
staff at our school. We took those decisions to minimise the potential for
financial issues in the near future that could have had a large negative impact
on the children’s education.
- Ensured that safeguarding at the
school meets statutory requirements, including termly reviews, meeting safeguarding
lead and helping carry out the annual S175 Safeguarding review.
- Carried out health and safety
visits to ensure that our school is a safe place for children, staff, parents
- Developed parental engagement by
being a visible presence at school, carrying out surveys and talking to parents
about issues that affected them and their children.
- Carried out formal visits;
meeting with subject leaders and talking to children about their experiences at
school and how they feel at school. These included visits examining: Pupil
Premium, Maths, English, Safeguarding, Special Educational Needs, Health and
Safety, Wraparound, Religious Education, Thrive, PE.
- Welcomed four new people onto the
Governing Board; Andy Edwards, Rebecca Knight, Helen Sewell and Katie Tucker.
- Were part of the Ofsted visit,
meeting the inspector and discussing governance, leadership, curriculum
development, pupil progress and attainment and how we support children with
- Regular informal visits to school
to discuss aspects of school life with Mr Wallis and other school staff,
children and parents. This is so we can get a better understanding for how
school life is progressing and to support the school development.
- Our committees met regularly to
discuss all aspects of our school. We have three main committees;
Learning and Development, Operations
- There were nine Learning and
Development committee meetings last year covering all aspects of the school
curriculum, Safeguarding, Special Educational Needs, Pupil Premium, the
development of school values and school data and results.
The Learning and Development
committee is updated regularly on Safeguarding (we are updated on any
Safeguarding issues in every meeting). We discuss curriculum topics with the
subject leads and are updated on any curriculum development. Last year there
was a particular focus on Maths, so we had additional meetings about this. We discuss the development of children within
groups, such as those on the Pupil Premium register and those with Special
- There were seven Operations
committee meetings last year, covering staffing, recruitment, health and
safety, school budget, Wraparound and our school premises. We are updated regularly
by the school business manager on school budget, any development of premises
and health and safety.
- There were five Pay committee
meetings. In the Pay committee we:
- carried out headteacher
- reviewed all staff performance management
We would like to thank parents
for their engagement with the school and their children’s education. The
support given during the Ofsted inspection was particularly welcomed, including
the positive comments on the Parent View survey, which the inspector said
reflected the positive community feel to Bosvigo.
There are many ways in which
parents and carers can help out at Bosvigo School, such as: volunteering to go
on school trips, listening to children read in class, helping FOBSA run events
